How Cheslie Kryst was honored at the 2022 Miss USA pageant
Kryst represented North Carolina at the Miss USA 2019 pageant and became part of a legendary quartet after winning the crown. For the first time in their year, Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America were all women of color.
“I think this is an important moment,” he told Insider at the time. “And maybe people can apply that inspiration to other areas of their lives as well.”

Kryst’s mother, April Simpkins, said the pageant queen suffered from high-functioning depression, which she hid from everyone “until shortly before her death.”
During an interview on Red Table Talk, Simpkins revealed that Kryst was “blind” to online criticism after winning Miss USA.
Simpkins said he hopes by sharing more of Kryst’s story he can “encourage people to be kinder.”
