7 Mistakes Contact Lens Wearers Shouldn’t Make
Do you wear contact lenses Then you surely know the advantages and disadvantages. One benefit is that you don’t have to wear glasses, but contact lenses can irritate your eyes and putting them in and taking them out can be a bit of a hassle. There are many things to consider when wearing contact lenses, as even the smallest speck of dirt can irritate and even damage your eyes. So here are seven mistakes contact lens wearers often make.
7 Mistakes that contact lens wearers should pay attention to
1. water
It’s so tempting to just go for a swim or shower when you’re in between your connections because it’s so much easier. Better not to do this! There are bacteria and fungi in the water that can get into your eyes and cause infection or worse, eye damage. Some people have been (partially) blinded by using dirty contact lenses. Although this possibility is highly unlikely, it is better not to risk it. Even plain tap water can damage lenses.
2. Sleep
Eyes need oxygen, so sleeping with contact lenses is more likely to irritate or even infect the eyes. Even a short nap can do significant harm. That’s why always remove your contact lenses before going to bed, even if you go to bed late and all you want to do is get under the duvet and fall asleep right away.
3. Clean
Do you rinse your contact lenses with tap water when there is no solution for the lenses? Let it be! Bacteria and compounds in the water can damage the lenses and contaminate them rather than clean them. This is bad for contact lenses and also for your eyes.
4. Duration
Stick to the time quota for your contact lenses. Do you wear weekly lenses? Then you should throw them away after seven days. Also, keep track of the days you wear monthly lenses so you don’t accidentally wear them too long. For example, you can set a timer or alarm clock on your mobile phone to remind you to replace your contact lenses after 30 days.
5. Storage
When was the last time you cleaned or changed your contact lens case? If all you get is “umm…”, it’s probably time to get a new one or disinfect an existing one. The sheath is a great place for bacteria and fungi to grow, as it stays moist at all times.
6. Dirty hands
It is obvious that hands must be clean before putting on contact lenses, but many people do not wash their hands properly before putting on or taking off their lenses. Always wash your hands with soap and dry them thoroughly. Drying is just as important as washing your hands!
7. Too long
Remove your contact lenses on time because wearing them for too long at a time can dry and irritate your eyes. In the long run, this can damage your eyes and possibly even make you unable to wear contact lenses. So remove your contact lenses early in the evening and give your eyes some rest by wearing glasses instead. You should always pay attention to the eyes – because once the damage is done, it can no longer be undone.
